Alfa Coach Holidays

A Taste of Cornwall Wine, Coast & Gardens

Resort - Newquay

Overview

Newquay is Cornwall's premier holiday resort boasting some of the finest coastline and beaches in Europe. Although well known as Britain's surfing capital, there are many other activities and the surrounding countryside has an endless wealth of fascinating places to visit. The town is an ancient one, dating from the fifteenth century when a new quay was constructed. The heart of the town is the old harbour but it spreads along the cliff tops which stand behind the eleven magnificent sandy beaches. Newquay offers wonderful cliff and beach walks, a picturesque harbour to explore and the variety of activities one associates with such a major resort, including swimming pools, golf, putting, squash, tennis, bowls, boating, shark fishing and horse riding. There are also the atmospheric smugglers' pubs which are a living reminder of the more colourful side of Cornwall's history!

Itinerary

Day 1 - Outward Travel

Day 2 - The Lost Gardens of Heligan & Truro

  • Today we visit one of the UK’s most treasured gardens. Once hidden beneath years of overgrown brambles, The Lost Gardens of Heligan have been carefully rediscovered and beautifully restored. Spanning 200 acres, this enchanting landscape has been thoughtfully created to inspire both young explorers and curious minds. Wander along peaceful woodland paths, discover more than 300 varieties of heritage fruit, vegetables and herbs, meet rare native breed animals, and enjoy the magic of a truly unique historic estate. Later, you’ll have free time to explore Truro. Located at the head of the River Fal, Truro is a delightful market town with a history stretching back over 800 years. Its most striking landmark is the magnificent cathedral, whose green spire and impressive Gothic design dominate the skyline. Built at the turn of the 20th century, it remains the centrepiece of this beautiful Cornish city.

Day 3 - Mevagissey & Knightor Winery – Guided Tour & Wine Tasting

  • This morning, we explore the charming, unspoilt fishing village of Mevagissey. Stroll through the galleries and shops that line the harbour walls, or visit the local museum, where a rich collection of memorabilia and artefacts brings the village’s history vividly to life. Later, we visit Knightor Winery, a boutique English winery overlooking St Austell Bay that specialises in limited batch wines. As a fully working winery, it produces still, sparkling, rosé, and white wines from carefully selected grape varieties suited to Cornwall’s climate. Our visit includes a guided tour of the winery, with a detailed explanation of each stage of the winemaking process from grape arrival to fermentation, maturation, and bottling. We also explore the winery facilities and learn about the techniques that give Knightor wines their distinctive character. The experience concludes with a tutored tasting of four wines, where we discover their flavour profiles, grape varieties, and the qualities that make each one unique..

Day 4 - Day at Leisure

Day 5 - Day at Leisure

Day 6 - Full day to Looe and Polperro

  • Discover two of Cornwall’s most enchanting destinations as we make our way to Looe and Polperro. Sandy beaches, rockpools and working fishing port make Looe one of the most popular spots on Cornwall’s southern coast – Looe island which is perched just off the seafront was once a holy pilgrimage site and now is a sanctuary for rare plants and wildlife. Further along the coast lies Polperro, where the narrow street are lined by pretty cottages that lead down to the old historic fishing harbour – a delight to explore!
