North Wales Highlights

Resort - Criccieth

Overview

Criccieth lies on the South side of the Llyn Peninsula with splendid views over Cardigan Bay. It is home to a medieval castle, built by the Welsh in the mid-thirteenth century but later taken by Edward I who incorporated it into his ring of castles designed to maintain Norman control. It was captured by Owain Glyndwr in the uprising of 1404 and the scorch marks from that battle can still be seen! The castle headland divides the town into two with a pebbly beach to the West and a lovely sheltered mainly sandy beach to the East. Nearby is the village of Llanystumdwy, which boasts a museum devoted to David Lloyd George, the “Welsh Wizard”, whose family once lived in Criccieth. The countryside around Criccieth is breathtaking with fabulous coastal views over Cardigan Bay, awesome mountain scenery in Snowdonia and delightful gardens and castles at every turn.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Outward Travel Criccieth– En Route Chester

  • We depart the interchange and make our way to the medieval city of Chester a place where history and heritage are visible at every turn. Highlights include the Roman Amphitheatre, the ancient city walls, and the magnificent cathedral, all of which are well worth exploring (entry fees may apply). You can also enjoy browsing a mix of independent boutiques and well-known high street stores along the famous “Rows”—distinctive half-timbered, two-tier galleries found nowhere else in the world. From here, we continue our journey on to Criccieth.

Day 2 - Pwllheli & Porthmadog

  • Today we travel to Pwllheli, a lively seaside town at the gateway to the Llŷn Peninsula, designated as an area of outstanding Natural Beauty. Full of charm and character, its narrow streets are lined with independent shops, boutiques, traditional pubs, cafés, and restaurants. Pwllheli Harbour has a fascinating past, once importing continental wines and providing refuge for smugglers and pirates. We also spend time in the delightful town of Porthmadog. With its rich maritime heritage and historic importance at the heart of the slate industry, there is plenty to discover. Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely stroll or unwind with a cup of tea in one of the welcoming cafés.

Day 3 - Day at Leisure

Day 4 - Caernarfon & Snowdonia National Park

  • We start the day with a visit to historic Caernarfon, dominated by its imposing Norman Castle where the redeveloped harbour bustles with sailing boats and motor yachts. We then venture into Snowdonia National Park making stops in beautiful Llanberis at the foot of Mount Snowdon and charming Betws-y-Coed.
